'psssh!' opens with its thesis statement right there in the refrain: pain, sorrow, suffering, self hate. it's not subtle, and it's not trying to be. the track captures that specific saturation point where the constant barrage of bad news, anxiety and outrage stops feeling heavy and starts feeling absurd. sonically, it lands somewhere between twenty one pilots and awolnation, blending distorted guitars with electronic pop production and punk urgency. the arrangement builds and releases in waves, giving the chaos room to breathe before slamming back in. i love the almost joyful in how it refuses to solve anything, instead letting the pressure hiss out. it's an explosive, enjoyable single.
actve captve is the project of austin based songwriter and producer justin han, with deep ties to new york city. he describes the sound as 'post traumatic pop', music interested not just in what hurts but in what happens when you keep living, wanting, connecting and creating anyway. the project moves freely between alt rock, indie pop, electronic production and the emotional urgency of emo and punk. comparisons to glass animals, the 1975 and grandson make sense, but there's a restlessness here that feels distinctly his own. a great track.
