the lost art of making friends – messy eater

The verdict

“messy eater turns loneliness into something warm and wryly beautiful on 'the lost art of making friends'”

'the lost art of making friends' opens the blue sundae ep with a confession dressed in velvet. the track pulls from confessional honesty, filtered through 90s jazzy hip-hop textures that sound brilliant. there's a gentle sunday swing to the production, spacious enough to let the vulnerability breathe but enough to keep the track building. lyrically it sits in that uncomfortable space where sadness meets self-awareness, an admission that stings because you recognise it. the humour is there too, dry and human, stopping the whole thing from ever tipping into self-pity. lovely chords, and a sense of real care in how it all fits together. a beauty.

messy eater is the music and illustration project of pete bott, based in york, england. since launching in late 2024 he's built serious momentum, playing a sold out sofar sounds show, a live session for bbc introducing, and sharing a stage with nile rodgers & chic at camper calling festival. he was named one of ten breakthrough artists at the aesthetica festival. apple music, amazing radio and bbc introducing have all championed the project, drawing comparisons to gorillaz, beck and a tribe called quest. we love it too, and expect big things going into 2027.

thank u for making this messy eater 🎷
