'colorful land' is a bright, pulsing slice of synth pop that sets the stage for animal souls' november lp, the abyss. the track features ella blame on vocals, and her voice sits perfectly in the swirling electronic textures michael fisher has built around it. there's a lovely big noisy snare in this, and the production feels vintage and weird in the best possible way, layers of synth landing exactly where they need to. i absolutely love the percussive clutter in this, and it's a confident opening statement, one that makes you want to hear what comes next. a charming, well-crafted single.
animal souls is a multi-genre project based out of abbotsford, canada, led by bassist and producer michael fisher. he's been writing and performing since the late 1970s but only began recording seriously during the pandemic, when he retired from a 27-year career at live nation entertainment. since then the project has released an lp, wisdom of crowds, a two-track ep take me home, and a string of singles. the ensemble pulls in players and singers from across the fraser valley and beyond. this guy's definitely one to watch. it's great.
