today's pop picks cover a lot of emotional ground: a hard-won confessional bridging bedroom pop and stadium anthems, a velvet-toned neo-soul slow dance, a glossy disco-pop fantasy with a dark sense of humour, and a folk-rock meets electronic mashup for uncertain times. four tracks that all know exactly what mood they're chasing.
fmu - ohnoah
The verdict
“ohnoah turns hard-won pain into a beautifully cathartic pop anthem with fmu”
fmu blends intimate bedroom-pop production with massive, stadium-sized hooks. and that contrast kinda just mirrors exactly what the song's about, loving the very thing that's poisoning you. it's the second chapter in a series about being non-binary, queer, depressed and lonely, and that honesty gives the hooks real weight instead of just sounding big for the sake of it. there's a jeremy zucker meets mgk quality to the whole thing, messy, carefree and melodic in equal measure. it's a genuinely moving listen.
ohnoah is a rotterdam based artist who spent years writing and producing hits for others, including steve aoki, miss montreal and wulf, before a period of homelessness pushed them to keep creating out of a van rather than quit. fmu marks a real step into the spotlight after years working behind the scenes, and it's clearly not a victory lap so much as an anthem for anyone who's ever felt invisible. after years building other people's hits, it's about time ohnoah got to keep one for themself. a great track.
thank u for making this ohnoah 🖤
save the last dance - a'shon galaxy
The verdict
“a'shon galaxy glides into his new single 'save the last dance' with genuinely effortless, late-night neo-soul charisma”
save the last dance is a neo-soul slow-burn built on warm chords and a hypnotic groove, gliding between cool confidence and something a lot more intimate. a'shon galaxy's silky vocal delivery does most of the heavy lifting here, never oversung, always in the pocket. it feels genuinely like a late-night invitation rather than a generic love song, specific and warm rather than vague. i need more smooth listening like this in my life, it's refreshing and kinda classic in vibe. and the harmonies? so lovely.
friend of the blog a'shon galaxy is a vallejo, california based r&b artist pulling from vintage keyboards, rhythmic guitars and deep drum grooves to build a sound that feels both familiar and distinctly his own. save the last dance is part of a bigger body of work exploring love, heartbreak, longing and joy, and it's a strong showcase of that range. this is the kind of song that rewards a proper late-night, headphones-on listen. a beauty.

cocoon - get bec
The verdict
“get bec wraps a deliciously dark sense of humour around one of the catchiest pop hooks we've heard this summer”
cocoon is glossy, infectious disco-pop with a genuinely tongue-in-cheek streak, turning an all-consuming crush into a tropical fantasy before letting things slide into full stalker-girl territory. the hook is massive and the production is spotless. but it's the dark humour running underneath that makes it stand out. written and produced entirely by get bec herself, there's a real vibe in every detail. it's a genuinely irresistible pop moment, sun, skin and a little menace all at once.
get bec is the solo project of perth based producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist abi bec, who won the focusrite emerging music producer bursary in 2020 while studying in london before returning home in 2022 to build out her own fluorescent electropop world. cocoon follows her debut single, firestarter, and continues that same streak of bright synths and sharp, dark storytelling. australia's next pop sensation feels like less of a stretch with every release.
thank u for making this get bec 🦋
parakeets - oaken wires
The verdict
“oaken wires turn london's wild parakeets into a beautifully sharp metaphor for surviving dangerous times”
parakeets maps the end of a relationship through rose-tinted glasses. all chances missed and words left unspoken, before the chorus turns that reflection into something more defian. an acknowledgement that we're living in more dangerous times and still surviving. the title comes from the wild parakeets thriving in north london's parks, far from their origins in africa and asia. musically it's a compelling blend; a touch of gorrilaz, a dash of dj shadow but with some folk rock stylings. oddly, the drum production kinda reminds me of early 2000's banger merz's 'many weathers apart. regardless, it's a genuinely sharp piece of songwriting.
oaken wires are a london based duo, two tottenham dads who met taking their kids to the park and decided to make music together. jake, aka oaken lee, brings the folk-rock rawness, tim, aka cutwires, the electronic precision. it's a meeting of minds and styles that genuinely works on this, and it follows their first release, footprints. a great origin story turned into an even better sound. we definitely hope these lads keep releasing.
