TODAY’S INDIE PICKS

this weekend’s picks are all about the reflective indie songwriting, groove-led soul and rough-edged alternative rock. tonnes of character here, so let’s dive right in!

torn – cries of redemption

cries of redemption return with towering guitars and brilliant vocals giving us a fierce modern rock banger

torn pushes forward through distorted riffs, heavy percussion and sharp melodic tension, balancing some really solid rock weight with emotional atmosphere. the track moves between restraint and release, with maria duque’s frankly great vocal sitting against some impressively thick guitar textures and driving rhythms that give the single its restless momentum. subtle it’s not, but it absolutely rocks.

savannah project cries of redemption reconnect with their roots on this latest release, bringing back guitarist billy “sriracha” babcock for a track centred around raw execution and organic production. led by ed silva, the project explores themes of conflict, duality and emotional imbalance while pulling influence from modern rock and alternative metal. it’s a heady combination, and really works – after years of building their identity across different collaborators and vocalists, torn feels like a confident return to the heavier side of the project’s sound. get stuck in below, you won’t regret it.

second time around – don’t look now

don’t look now deliver a bright, playful indie zinger full of charm and personality

second time around bursts open with a lovely indie chug, with uplifting saxophone lines, jangled guitars and an easy-going vibe that carries the warmth of classic british indie pop. the track keeps things light and melodic while still holding impressive musicianship. it gives the release a brilliant timeless and nostalgic vibe that really doesn’t ever lose its sense of fun.

windsor band don’t look now have built their identity around storytelling, humour and sharp songwriting, drawing influence from acts like the beautiful south, squeeze and madness. inspired by a holiday romance in ibiza, the single captures a carefree energy while showcasing the band’s blend of pop, soul, funk and rock influences. if you like your indie catchy and sepia-tinged, this is the one for you.

trapped (i’m doing fine) – c’batch

c’batch blends hypnotic grooves and emotional tension into a powerhouse of a soulful single

trapped (i’m doing fine) moves into deep basslines, rhythmic percussion and emotionally charged vocals with a smooth, late-night intensity. the track balances dancefloor energy against moments of introspection, creating a groove-heavy atmosphere that still leaves space for vulnerability and reflection. it’s got a craft to it that really shines through.

c’batch continues to blur the line between electronic soul, groove-driven indie and modern production on this reworked release. centred around resilience and emotional contradiction, the single explores the tension between internal struggle and outward confidence without becoming overly dramatic. it’s a really impressive track, with a touch of cinematic edge while still staying rooted in rhythm and feeling. definitely one of our favourites this month so far.

two hearts – paul louis villani

paul louis villani turns everyday tension into a wonderfully rich and heart-filled country-blues single

two hearts opens with intimate acoustic picking before expanding into impresive guitars, crisp percussion and a warm mid-tempo groove that carries things into the chorus effortlessly. there’s just a lovely, relaxed honesty running through the track, with villani letting the melody and arrangement breathe naturally as the song opens out.

friend of the blog, and melbourne artist paul louis villani, eases into some big emotions here; connection, friction and long-term relationships. inspired by a moment at home that pushed the track into focus, the release feels personal while still landing with broad emotional clarity. the blend of blues warmth and country songwriting gives the single a honest quality that feels rooted in lived experience rather than polished sentimentality. a brilliant single.
