TODAY’S INDIE PICKS

today’s picks move between open-road americana, worn-in indie rock and reflective folk textures. there’s a strong sense of movement running through these releases, whether emotional, physical or somewhere in between, with each artist leaning into raw songwriting and grounded production.

travelin’ heart – joseph turner & the dudes of hazard

joseph turner & the dudes of hazard deliver a windows down indie anthem full of warmth and heart

travelin’ heart moves through acoustic guitar, pedal steel and mandolin with an easy sense of motion, gradually opening into a wide, melodic chorus built for long drives and late-night reflection. the track cleverly balances intimate verses with bigger full-band moments, giving the release a natural lift without losing its emotional weight. but it’s the vocal that’s the real standout, a lovely rock vocal that makes this genuinely stand out.

friend of the blog joseph turner & the dudes of hazard build their sound around americana storytelling and modern indie production, pulling together influences from folk, country and alternative rock. not suprisingly, this stuff has been shaped by recordings captured during east coast road trips, and this single is our favourite yet. it talks about ideas of escape, perspective and emotional reset while still keeping its songwriting grounded and direct. it’s brilliant, and we’ve got high hopes for these guys.

thank u for making this joseph turner & the dudes of hazard 🌟

profanity – jk jerome

jk jerome delivers a deeply personal indie showstopper full of tension and emotional clarity

profanity blends finger-picked electric guitar, warped delay textures and deep sub bass into something intimate, reflective and quietly cinematic. it’s produced like a dream this one, moving with a slow-burning intensity, balancing acoustic warmth against electronic shadows while allowing every lyric to land with weight and precision. the handclaps, harmony flourishes and vocals all work wonderfully, and it builds somewhere very, very special.

uk singer-songwriter jk jerome writes from lived experience, pulling from a childhood shaped by poverty, class and a single-parent upbringing in 1990s britain. centred around themes of stigma, identity and compassion, the single feels deeply personal without losing its wider emotional pull. having already performed with bbc radio 2, mahogany sessions and major uk festivals, jerome arrives with a debut that feels thoughtful, understated and fully formed. a real banger this one.

a world without heroes – jade ell

jade ell reshapes a classic song into a beautifully haunting, intimate and deeply human reinterpretation

a world without heroes builds around a curious mix of omnichord pulses, soft guitar textures and drifting steel lines that give the track a reflective and cinematic atmosphere. the world we enter has a lovely space, and the arrangement is understated, allowing the emotional weight of the lyrics to sit right at the centre of the recording. it’s a fantastic vibe, but it’s not all atmospherics, it’s easily matched by the song it sits within.

stockholm artist jade ell brings years of songwriting experience into this reinterpretation, transforming the kiss original into something more fragile and contemporary. working alongside musicians connected to first aid kit, she leans into minimal production choices that make every detail feel intentional. the result is a release that reflects uncertainty, resilience and the need for people willing to stand their ground in difficult moments. i really love this, and it was a real surprise favourite of the month so far.

thank u for making this jade ell ✨

p.t.a.b. – balaban and the bald illegales

balaban and the bald illegales return with a snarling and fearless guitar-based post-punk zinger

p.t.a.b. drives forward on distorted riffs, pounding drums and sharp-edged basslines, balancing old-school indie rock grit with a healthy dose of restless energy of post-punk and grunge. it’s tight, all immediate and wonderfully unfiltered, capturing the tension and frustration running through its heavy, hook-filled arrangement. the video’s fun too, with the lads rocking out in what seems like a shipping container.

stourbridge band balaban and the bald illegales have spent years carving out their own lane across alternative rock, post-punk and underground indie scenes. after reforming in 2025 with a renewed lineup and sharper sense of purpose, the group channel themes of misinformation, identity and modern collapse into something raw and direct. the release marks a fierce new chapter for a band reconnecting with the intensity that shaped their earliest recordings. honestly? it just rocks.

thank u for making this balaban and the bald illegales ⚡
