TODAY’S POP PICKS

today’s pop picks move through flirty alt-pop, cosmic r&b, dark cinematic hooks and maximalist guitar-pop. these four tracks turn crushes, longing, self-questioning and emotional loops into bold, vivid moments.

be my boo – aina

aina turns digital-age romance into a brilliantly bright, technicolour alt-pop stunner

be my boo is a fun, flirty pop track built around bright synths, bouncy rhythms and a hook that captures the rush of a crush you cannot stop thinking about. it has the feel of a late-night text you keep rereading, playful and dreamy but still sharp enough to land. it’s produced really well, and i love the big pop chorus that really does feel like a lift off. aina’s vocal is great fun, and gets the message across in tehnicolour style.

aina is a singer-songwriter, producer and creative director building her own world from scratch. she writes and produces her songs, plays piano and designs her visuals herself, shaping a sound that moves between infectious pop, electronic dance and vibey alt-pop. inspired by pinkpantheress, griff and olivia rodrigo, this release feels young, self-made and full of modern romantic energy. a brilliant single.

personal martyr – skar de line

skar de line turns inner sacrifice into deep, dark, cinematic pop drama that really, really works

personal martyr is a hypnotic dark-pop track with sparse but grand production, blending percussive, orchestral and electronic elements into a sound that feels both intimate and huge. its trance-like beat and emotionally charged chorus carry questions about pain, purpose and the cost of constantly trying to become better. it’s out there in its’ own lane, and not only that, it’s also genuinely great as song. brilliantly dark and bold production choices and synth work really do push this into banger territory.

skar de line is a london-based artist, born and raised in sweden, drawing from cinematic soundtracks, pop, hip-hop and electronic rock. a committed diy creator, he writes every lyric and melody line while also directing and editing his own visuals. filmed in the desert-like landscape of dungeness, the accompanying video expands the song’s emotional world, turning personal struggle into something stark, visual and unforgettable. a beautiful, bold banger.

groundhog day – anna thoresen

anna thoresen turns emotional repetition into a bold, dark and experimental beauty of a single

groundhog day is a guitar-driven pop track with classic rock instincts, experimental chords and a shadowy, spiralling atmosphere. written during a lonely period in los angeles, it captures the feeling of repeating the same painful patterns in work, relationships and self-belief, turning that loop into a tense, memorable release. this one hits deep, having been in that phase a few times in my life. and this one matches the round and round vibe with incredible success; the swirling background vocal flourishes, and the lyrical content really land it.

anna thoresen is a los angeles-based artist who wrote and produced the song in her home studio, drawing inspiration from the police, fleetwood mac and dijon. she describes the track as a kind of death march, but its production keeps pushing forward with edge and intent. the accompanying short film, directed by sebastian johnson-deal, turns that emotional cycle into a bright, maximalist visual world. it’s a beauty this one, and it deserves to do very well.
