TODAY’S ROCK PICKS

today’s rock picks move through dystopian city pressure, late-night party chaos, futurepsych texture and spoken-word protest. these four tracks keep the guitars sharp, the mood wired and the ideas moving fast.

restless city – jfk blue

jfk blue turn dystopian city life into a organic, slow-burning rock banger

restless city is a dark, slow-burning rock track with an opening siren, guest vocals from rebecca downes and a mood that feels part orwell, part blade runner. it’s a compelling mix, and it works with incredible kind of relaxed style, and a whole lot of bluesy groove. the vocal is really the standout here, and it is not built to overwhelm with complexity, but it gets under the skin through atmosphere, tension and a hook that grows with each listen. it’s great.

jfk blue are a london six-piece returning with their first new material since 2019, led by singer, writer and guitarist stef. recorded at bonafide studios in muswell hill with producer and engineer brian, the track came from a full-band process, six musicians in a room shaping real-world unease into sound. inspired by news, social media and modern dread, it feels human, focused and sharply observed. it’s a brilliant, bluesy banger this month, and you should definitely check it out below.

south florida police – andrei british

andrei british channel night-shift chaos into a fast, loud and cinematic rock banger

south florida police is a high-energy rock track running at full speed, built around straightforward instrumentation, good ol’ fashioned momentum and a ride-along feel. at 142 bpm, it captures the rush of a south florida late night, moving between party-rock brightness and the adrenaline of a police night shift. i love the vibes here, and the rock vocals are the genuine highlight; i basically feel like a beer or two when they come in, and then a couple more by the time the guitar solo hits.

andrei british lean into the cinematic side of hard-rock storytelling, making the track feel ready for loud speakers, fast highways and after-dark playlists. its appeal comes from the way it turns a specific setting into something instantly physical: flashing lights, heat, speed and the sense that the night could turn at any moment. overall, this rock track is fun, direct and charged, rock music made for your your next big party. an essential track this month.

hands so cold  – 800cc

800cc blend futurepsych texture with modern love and digital unease to incredibly compelling effect

hands so cold is a modern day love song shaped by experimental rock textures, honest confusion and the search for something revealing. the track pushes guitar-based music into a moodier, more atmospheric space, letting feeling, effect and sound design carry as much weight as the writing. the vibe is impeccable here, and i particularly like the careful, restrained percussion. but it’s the vocal production that pushes it into spectacular territory. it’s beautiful.

800cc is the latest experimental rock project from detroit-based artist and designer kevin kline, made in collaboration with renowned uk producer charlie andrew. together, they explore moods, textures and emotional fragments that pull guitar music into today’s shifting landscape. the release feels personal without being too altogether neat, using atmosphere to uncover the parts of love that are difficult to explain but still impossible to ignore. a brilliant release, and we hope there’s more coming from 800cc.

things that caught my attention – the subtheory

the subtheory turn media overload into a wonderfully tense, spoken-word protest rock banger

things that caught my attention cuts through modern noise with spoken-word urgency, punk energy and dark trip-hop texture. the track feels like the inside of a tired mind after scrolling through too much chaos, moving through distraction, inequality, outrage and the strange numbness of trying to stay alert. big fan of the production here; part punk, part drum and bass but also with a slight feel of dub or reggae? not sure, but it’s fantastic.

the subtheory use stripped-back delivery and tense production to make something that feels less like a polished slogan and more like a live thought forming in real time. distorted edges and shifting moods place the song somewhere between a late-night broadcast, protest soundtrack and stream-of-consciousness journal entry. angry, distracted and very difficult to resist, this is an important single that also has the appeal of sounding fantastic. more of this please, lads 🙂

thank u for making this the subtheory 📡
