TODAY’S POP PICKS

today’s pop picks move through strange textures, emotional release and playful left turns. these four tracks stretch pop into curious, atmospheric and cinematic shapes while keeping melody at the centre.

losing faith in everything and emptied on i-10 – ambergrove

ambergrove make a stunning widescreen indie-pop single built on beautiful nostalgia, hope and big emotions

losing faith in everything and emptied on i-10 opens with early 00s record scratching before shifting into soulful indie-pop, bright chorus energy and a bold 80s-style guitar solo. by the time the gospel choir arrives, the song has become a full, summer-ready release with a wide emotional reach. it’s got a real groove to it this one, with a tastefully sparse bass, and a lovely sparkle to the chorus.

ambergrove is an artist collective built around shared connection rather than fixed identity, bringing many voices and backgrounds into one creative space. this track is about holding onto hope when giving up feels easier, turning that feeling into something warm, expansive and immediate. its mix of throwback detail and fresh pop instinct gives it a broad appeal without sanding away its personality. we need more hope these days, and this single has it in spades. essential stuff.

my junky friend – adrian sood

adrian sood finds a compelling sense of beauty in this late night, haunted pop comedown

my junky friend is an wonderfully atmospheric pop track built around muted, distinctive piano tones. robyn’s vocal presence and a mood that feels intimate but just so unsettled. the song sits in the blurred space between escape and connection, capturing the fragile pull of needing someone as the night begins to fade. and fade it does, with a whole menu of things you probably shouldn’t have done.

adrian sood is a dublin-based artist who writes, arranges, produces and records from his home studio. influenced by radiohead and the stone roses, he uses this release to explore addiction, intimacy and the emotional confusion that can arrive after a party. written from the perspective of two people chasing highs while avoiding what they really feel, it turns a messy 4am moment into something tender, uneasy and memorable. i absolutely love this.

replaced by robots – replaced by robots

replaced by robots turn future-dread into a sharp, cinematic theme-song rush

replaced by robots is a beautifully strange, high-concept pop track with the energy of a theme tune and the mood of a world glitching at the edges. with a nod to juicebox by the strokes, it also pulls from batman, peter gunn and soul train-style movement. it’s a heady mix that really works, especially when it skilfully balances bleak humour with a musical arrangement that gives the song a playful sense of propulsion. there’s a sort of spooky character that i love, and is produced really well.

replaced by robots are goolkasian, adam wade and heather joy morgan, a band leaning into electronic wasteland imagery while keeping the concept fun and theatrical. the release is also the theme song from the zero joy zero short film, directed by damon wellner and heather joy morgan. with stop-motion robots and no ai involved, it turns pop spectacle into something weird, witty and fully alive. a real banger this week, and we hope there’s more coming from these guys.

amethyst cameo – pocket lint

pocket lint turns creative obsession into vivid, genre-hopping art-pop

amethyst cameo is a curious and colourful art-pop piece that treats sound like a small cabinet of wonders. built with a vignette-like approach, the track moves through texture, melody and off-kilter imagination, giving pocket lint’s world a handmade sense of detail and discovery.

pocket lint is the musical vehicle for mark heffernan, who began the project after trying to carve cameos from amethyst before returning to the studio instead. the song explores the obsession of creation and the compulsive need to keep making music. as the second single from the album wunderkammer, it works like one exhibit inside a wider collection, full of odd beauty, purple dust and restless creative energy.

thank u for making this pocket lint 💎
