TODAY’S POP PICKS

a cinematic and character-led selection today, where pop and atmosphere meet wonderfully. these tracks carve out a distinct world while keeping melody front and centre.

godstruck – kneeshake

kneeshake delivers a stunningly ambitious alt-pop moment rooted in power, identity and ambition

godstruck is driven by hard-edged production and layered synth textures, building a heady mix of beauty and intensity. there’s ambition here, pairing a firm rhythmic backbone with just the most wonderful sound world. bland pop it ain’t, and it’s all the better for it. kinda feels a bit hyper pop, slightly alt-pop, a touch of arca and a smidge of anthony and the johnsons? whatever, it’s definitely in it’s own fantastic lane.

kneeshake, a gothenburg-based artist and producer, continues to shape a deeply personal alt-pop space with this release. rooted in themes of self-identity and transformation, this track marks another step in an exciting sound that has a lot going for it. it’s a stunner, and i genuinely can’t wait for more.

messy Eater blends playful songwriting with a compelling vision of rainbow pop textures

Anything for an easy life built around a laidback groove and live drum feel, carries an lovely sense of movement that vibes along in a sunday afternoon kinda way. with warm electric piano tones sitting alongside bubbling synths and subtle rhythmic shifts, this tune unfolds in literally all the right ways. the chorus is definitely the standout, building things beautifully, and you’re left wondering why this isn’t all over radio 6 right now.

friend of the blog Messy Eater, emerging from the uk alternative pop scene, uses this release to expand a vibrant and genre-blending sound. part of a wider ep rollout, the track leans into themes of modern fatigue with a playful edge, balancing humour with observation. it reinforces an identity built on colour, creativity and a clear sense of sonic curiosity. it’s a stunner.

static air – vela jones

vela jones creates a rich, cinematic pop moment filled with a cosmic atmosphere and emotional depth

static air shaped by immersive production and a fantastically sweeping synth layers, builds a sense of tension that gradually opens into release. the track feels all about the atmosphere, and a pretty tough groove underneath that i really love. it’s mixed wide and cinematic, the drums sound huge, the vocal delivery is great, and it has the tiniest hint of a janet jackson bange. a reference i’m all in favour of.

vela jones, a uk-based conceptual artist project, blends art-pop with futuristic identity and storytelling. this release reflects a focus on emotional songwriting within a visually driven world, suggesting an artist working across sound and narrative simultaneously. it highlights a direction that values depth, cohesion and a strong sense of artistic vision. a brilliant track.

after death – agnes fred

agnes fred delivers a fragile and shadowy pop beauty shaped by memory and emotional distance

after death is built on minimal instrumentation, distant synths and drifting layers. it creates a really impressive and immersive listening space. i love the blend of almost trad folk-like delivery, with the eno-like ambient and reverb-heavy textures, and it leads to a sound world i’m really happy to find myself in. the vocal sits wonderfully, as it needs to when things are so bold and bare, and i’d love to see this live.

agnes fred, a conceptual project emerging from brussels, introduces a distinct artistic approach with this debut. rooted in poetic inspiration and cinematic thinking, the release explores themes of memory, identity and perception. it marks the beginning of a wider narrative-driven body of work, positioning the project within a more experimental and atmospheric corner of pop. a really compelling piece of work.
