TODAY'S POP PICKS

Issue

today's pop picks lean cinematic and nocturnal: an 80s tinged night-drive from a chilean synth-noir duo, a warm acoustic reunion anthem from a decades-deep music industry veteran, a sci-fi dream-pop audiovisual project unfolding across an imagined planet, and a moody sydney downtempo groove built for headphones after dark. four tracks, four very different worlds.

endless highway - chroma noir

The verdict

“chroma noir turn a night drive into a genuinely thrilling blast of 80s tinged synth-noir”

endless highway trades ritual for forward motion, a night-drive track soaked in 80s action-movie energy and dark, driving synth-pop. right up my street this one, and chilean metal guitarist gabriel hidalgo's shred solo cuts straight across the moodiness, giving it a real burst of urgency. it's got clear depeche mode and new order dna, but mauricio solari's expressive vocals and mario castro's cinematic synths keep it feeling distinctly their own. vocally is where i really vibe with it, and the track is genuinely gripping listen, all momentum and atmosphere.

chroma noir are a santiago, chile based duo formed in late 2024, built around solari's vocals and castro's synth work. since their september 2025 debut, burned into my mind, they've released four more singles, all produced by nicolás arce, tracing a sound that balances nostalgia with forward momentum. that's a serious release pace for a duo barely a year old. an essential single this summer.

here we go - stephen webber

The verdict

“stephen webber packs songwriting pedigree into a genuinely joyful post-pandemic anthem”

here we go is a country-fried, post-pandemic acoustic anthem built around powerhouse vocalist zahara (annette philip). it's warm and unpretentious in a way that plenty of more polished tracks aren't. and there's real craft in how simply it's put together, no surprise given who's behind the board. the 'here we go' hook really lands, and captures that whole vibe of finally getting to be in a room with people again. it's a genuinely uplifting listen.

stephen webber is a new york city based emmy-winning composer and grammy-nominated producer who spent decades at berklee college of music, including saving the iconic power station recording studios during his time as executive director of berkleenyc. his credits range from producing dj premier and nas to performing with emmylou harris and bela fleck, and he's taught turntablism to generations of students. that's a lot of pedigree behind one this stunner of a single. check it out below.

through waves - kavé

The verdict

“kavé builds through waves into a genuinely immersive slice of dream-pop cinema”

through waves unfolds like a three-act film, tracing alex kos's journey along an alien coastline before voice actors abigail turner and bronwyn rose enter as characters. and when they enter, they carry the song into a psychedelic dream-pop finale. isn't it nice to come across ambitious, concept based music sometimes? and rather than bolting a music video onto a finished song, kavé writes scenes and dialogue straight into the composition itself, which makes the whole thing feel like a genuinely different kind of listening experience. the ambition is clearly earned, because the production lands in a deliciously dark, dream pop way.

kavé is the solo audiovisual project of london based musician and visual storyteller alex kos, exploring the imagined planet perpetua through a growing body of interconnected releases and films. through waves is the second chapter in that world, with a new film already in production. it's a unique project, and we really enjoyed diving into it. love to see where kavé goes next.

oh - zeecogency

The verdict

“zeecogency wraps late-night unease into a genuinely hypnotic downtempo groove”

oh is a moody, atmospheric electronic track built around a hypnotic groove and smoky, late-night textures. there's a heady blend of downtempo, trip-hop and cinematic electronica in here; and the whole thing melds into an after dark, headphone groover. best of all, it doesn't really rush anywhere, letting the atmosphere do most of the work. it's a genuinely immersive listen, and i love the vocal sample as rhythmic production flourishes, rather than a traditional samples. great stuff.

zeecogency is a sydney based electronic music project built around moody grooves and headphone-focused sound design, sitting somewhere between atmospheric electronic music and introspective city soundscapes. it's a very. very solid entry point into a sound clearly built for late nights and long drives. we're very much keeping an eye on zeecogency for the rest of 2026, and into next year.
