today’s rock picks lean into raw feeling and restless energy. these are songs that use guitars as emotional engines, pushing through uncertainty, overwhelm, and release without smoothing off the edges.
through the darkness – paul gehl
“paul gehl turns inner chaos into a stark, honest rock confession”
through the darkness moves like a mind caught in motion, tense, introspective, and emotionally exposed. driven by brooding melodies and a sense of forward momentum, the incredibly-produced track captures the push and pull of living with intrusive thoughts, choosing to keep moving even when clarity feels out of reach.
based in luxembourg, paul gehl records everything himself, but there’s nothing bedroom about this. the song feels personal rather than performative, rock as a way of naming the struggle and walking through it rather than escaping it. a great track.
thank u for making this paul gehl 🖤
megafauna – dog years
“dog years deliver the chorus of the year so far with a big-hearted, jagged rock banger”
megafauna is messy in the best way, packed with hooks, clanging guitars, and songs that twist and lurch before locking into something cathartic. drawing from 60s harmony and 90s alt-rock bite, dog years balance noise and sweetness, intensity and humour, always chasing emotional release.
and what a release it is; the chorus on this is a stunner. the best we’ve heard this year, and one that wouldn’t be out of place on a cribs banger. when paired with a fun video, gives you a true sense of what these wonderful weirdo’s are up to.
based in newcastle, the band recorded the album fast and loud in a tiny practice room. megafauna sounds like all the pieces finally clicking into place, ambitious, catchy, and unafraid to rock hard while still feeling deeply human. we love this.
thank u for making this dog years ⚡
