a debut shaped by love, longing, and the memories that still hold your heart
sonnen blume’s debut moves gently between memory and motion, blending dream-pop warmth with the intimacy of a singer-songwriter whisper. based in staffordshire and shaped by years of writing across cities and seasons, their work carries the soft ache of growing up, glowing like an old photo box opened in a quiet moment, colours fading at the edges but bright wherever the fingerprints linger.
influenced by lou reed, the velvet underground, angel olsen, and paolo nutini, the album drifts through nostalgia, quiet emotional honesty, and a hopeful reach toward new beginnings. written over more than a decade, from sheds in girvan to small rooms back home, these ten songs feel lived-in and deeply human, unfolding with the tenderness of someone remembering the past while still leaning toward what’s yet to come.
satellite opens the record with slow-motion charm, a track born in manchester and softened over the years. originally written at a quicker pace, it now drifts like smoke from the relationship it describes – loving someone who disappears into the haze every night. the chorus hides a tiny wink toward come on eileen, a secret note tucked into the melody, disguised so well no one ever spots it. it’s intimate, weary, and instantly compelling.

spaniels, written in a shed in girvan in 2022, brings a rare burst of optimism. it captures the start of a relationship, that early softness when everything feels light and full of promise. maybe it isn’t the flashiest song, but its honesty shines – sometimes the simplest joys deserve their moment.
making coffee, one of the album’s emotional anchors – and definitely a personal favourite -, holds regret and tenderness in equal measure. written slowly across years, it aches with the quiet of missing someone long after the routine has vanished. the sound took time to get right, but the finished track glows with the warmth of early mornings and the sting of memories that refuse to settle. tschüss, originally from 2015–2016, returns like a postcard from another life. rewritten with german verses and an english chorus, it dances with the energy of 99 luftballons. playful, bright, and a little strange, it brings a needed spark to the album’s middle stretch.
chungking express arrives with a decade’s worth of echoes. inspired by the film’s neon melancholy, the song blends new order-style guitar lines with a half-spoken, half–ravey detour that lifts it into something bold and cinematic. it’s experimental in the best way – the sound of a songwriter letting themselves play again. gongoozle is another rediscovered treasure, named after a lover of canals. “gina” is borrowed from a basquiat biopic, and the song carries that same mix of grit and romance. the original phone demo haunted the finished version, making it a challenge to recreate the exact vibe, but its charm remains intact – wandering, curious, glowing at the edges.
moving into the later part of the album, vitosha, the oldest song here, reaches back to 2012. written for an earlier band and inspired by the mountain overlooking sofia, it holds a touch of johnny cash in its bones. after years of silence, hearing it finally recorded feels like a door closing softly, or maybe opening again.
10th december returns to the shed in girvan – a sad little moment captured during a christmas visit, quiet and sharp like cold air. it’s simple, heartfelt, and perfectly placed. neon hearts, another older song from 2015-2016, gets new life through a fresh chorus and stubborn guitar riff. it’s nostalgic indie pop with a pulse, the kind that asks you to dance even while it aches a little.
the clock closes the album with one of its most romantic images: glasgow central station’s clock, the meeting place for generations of first dates. written in a single burst during lockdown, the song feels cinematic and tender, full of anticipation and citylight glow. it ends the record on a note of hope, the kind you only feel while waiting for someone you can’t stop thinking about.
in the end, sonnen blume is a decade of memories stitched into ten songs. it’s wistful, glowing, and full of heart – a debut that feels like someone finally letting their story into the world.
