THE NEW CITIZEN KANE DANCES WITH DESIRE AND MEMORY

Friend of the blog The New Citizen Kane’s new ‘Causing a commotion’ EP shimmers like late-summer heat. it’s all disco-tinted, nostalgic, and brimming with emotion. it’s feels both playful and bittersweet, the echo of a night you can’t forget.

based in london, kane blends soft synths, hypnotic grooves, and touches of disco-soul that move like waves between restraint and surrender. lead single ‘subconscious’ spins forbidden feelings into sound, two radio mixes mirroring the push and pull of reason and instinct. elsewhere, tracks like ‘bubble gum hot’ and ‘san diego’ add fizz and colour, flashes of small-town summers lingering like candy

it’s an ep that opens the door into kane’s ambitious psychedelika project – lush, kaleidoscopic, and unafraid of contradiction. desire and nostalgia entwined in a glitter-lit universe.

so imagine our happy faces when the new citizen kane agreed to share a little more about their latest release, and where it came from.

“Subconscious” explores the battle between restraint and surrender, with two mixes reflecting reason versus instinct. When you were writing it, how did you personally experience that tension between logic and desire – and how did you decide to represent it musically?

Subconscious came about after an unexpected attraction to a friend turned into a secret affair, and the whole time it played out I would try to explain it away with logic & reason, but whenever we were in the same room the attraction was animal and secret nature of it made it all the more exciting.

The original version of the song reflects that more logical side of me, the delivery in the perofrmance is sensual but a bit more restrained, there’s a certain dettached nonchalance there. I wanted to reflect the other side of it.. the undeniable, animal attraction, the instinct that keeps bringing you back to the situation time and time again to fully represent the situation. The primordial radio mix has that accelerated pulse & urgency in the delivery that reflect that.

Your upcoming album Psychedelika is described as a multi-sensory project that expands beyond music into film, design, photography, and immersive performance. Can you share how you envision fans engaging with it – is it more of a universe to explore or a single narrative to step into?

Psychedelika is deffinitely a universe to explore… I haven’t given an interview since TEMPLE.BEACH.DISCO.DADDY. so you’re getting a bit of an exclusive here: It’s a 2 part album, with part 1 coming this November, they are both full visual albums and there”s more of a cinematic lens to the music videos leaning more & more into the storytelling, rather than classic performance videos. Through the artwork for the album I’ve created the “Psychedelika” landscape, a colourful neon dreamworld. The visual, video & musical elements will all come together in a live exhibition/performance event in London, but a format that we can hopefully tour to some other cities.

Additionally, and this is really the cherry on top, everything comes together in the Psychedelika APP. This is a companion app I’ve developed that will be available to fans when they purchase (or pre-order) the physical album through my website. Through the app fans will have access to the album, and visual album of course (immediately if purchased in pre-order) there are games based around synesthesia which will unlock exclusive content, a mindful section with breathwork excercises & mini guided meditations set to music I’ve produced especially for the meditations (5-15mins) which can serve as entry points for someone who hasn’t practised meditation before or maybe feels uncomfortable with the idea, there’s a comminity section where fans will be able to interect with me & each other, exclusive merch drops. I have a few other surprises but I don’t wanna give everything away just yet.

Exciting! Looking forward to it. Much of your work plays with nostalgia – from disco funk to small-town summers – while still pushing into new sonic territory. How do you balance looking back with moving forward creatively, and what role does memory play in shaping your sound?

Memory is a huge part of what I do, if I wrote “in the now” only, my music would get pretty boring.. I’m in the best place I’ve ever been emotionally, I’m happily married, soon to be a father, I enjoy my nights in with my frenchie & hubby a lot more than a big night out these days, so when I’m writing a lot of the time I’m taking myself back in time to moments I’ve lived and either writing directly about that experience like in Subconscious, or writing about a kind of vibe or parallel experience to one I’ve lived like in Bubble Gum Hot.

My writing is quite visual and cinematic in style naturally, so often references to dates to specific items in songs tie into the nostalgia & help create an emotional link to the song. So while there’s a lot of looking backwards to aid me artistically, I try not to live in the past. As far as musical genres go, music is timeless and I always let the songwriting guide the production process, I don’t think too much about the genre I’m producing but rather I focus on the mood I’m creating.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about the rest of this year or your next release?

Well, I think I’ve shared too much already re: Psychedelika, hahaha, there are a lot of exciting things coming up, and if you’re only just discovering TNCK train, it’s a perfect time to jump onboard!

I will just say one more thing: the next single “I Don’t Need To Say” will be the big one. And I’m gonna leave it at that. Thank you for your time!
