in the world of marc soucy, musical timelines bend and shift like sunlight. the out cats is the fifth chapter in his ANTARTICA: the live archives series – a lovely wee journey where soucy revisits compositions written decades ago, now brought to life with the help of longtime collaborators ray lavigne and jeff carano.
a new voice to us, but this track slaps. part philosophical jam, part experimental jazz, and part archival time capsule. it grooves along with urgency at times, and a relaxed vibe at others – the playing on show here is a real joy. alongside the youtube video, it’s a little more like stumbling across a forgotten satellite transmission with banging tunes than a traditional track.
there’s echoes of soft machine, king crimson, and sun ra, but it’s never imitation. it’s all filtered through soucy’s lens: a composer now confidently mapping where he’s been and where he’s heading next.
thank you for making this marc soucy 🧭
