Preview: Benton Crane – Forgotten Souls

benton crane doesn’t just write songs – he tells stories. ‘forgotten souls’ his upcoming single out june 3rd, is a beautifully haunting cut which is part indie, part blues and a lot good.

you can tell it comes from somewhere deep. so much indie stuff just feels a little on the juvenile side – i got drunk, i got dumped by my girlfriend kinda thing – but this has a real backbone.

i dunno if it’s the big chorus, the occasional dire straits guitar licks or the sort of dark tension that sits underneath this.

whatever it is, it’s great.

and it arrives ahead of a new chapter for the colorado-based songwriter, who’s already dropped two full-lengths this year alone.

but ‘forgotten souls’ feels like a focal point – a song written back in 2016 that’s been reassembled on this cut. anyway, it shows. it’s got a lot going for it, so we were really happy when benton said he’d tell us a little more about the track…

benton, great track! what inspired forgotten souls’?
forgotten souls is the oldest song i’ve recorded. i wrote it back in 2016 as i was beginning my musical journey. to me, this song is a story of a haunting, inescapable past. things that linger forgotten, demanding to be heard.

we love it. how would you describe the sound of the new single to someone who’s never heard your music?
this song is a little different than some of my previous releases. it’s a little more upbeat and funky but still maintains the immersive lyricism that my fans have grown to appreciate in my songs.

what was the process like recording this track?
recording forgotten souls began back in 2021. it started with some basic tracks initially. i remember recording andrew (krist) on guitar at my old house and immediately realising that this song has potential. it was really cool hearing such an old song come to life. i periodically revisited this song over the years, piecing it together. i rerecorded vocals in 2024 and put the finishing touches/mixed it in early 2025. i’m really excited to finally put this song out after such a lengthy production process.

what do you hope people feel when they listen to it?
i hope people feel the rhythm of this song. i want feet tapping and the refrain stuck in your head! i also hope that people take an internal dive, relating the song to themselves and seeing what comes up.

it definitely had our feet tapping, so thanks to benton for dropping into our musical world. check this banger out when it’s released.

‘forgotten souls’ is out june 3rd on all major streaming platforms. it was mastered by mat leffler-schulman of mobtown studios and features andrew krist on lead guitar.

thanks for making this, benton crane 🖤
