born in a cold scottish factory town but raised on american heartbreak, patrick hynes is a contradiction that just works. his new single baby’s high again is all dusty motel melancholy and spiralling romance, carried by a voice that sounds like it’s seen both sides of love.
the allure of country music and americana sort of puzzles me sometimes. when wee patrick was growing up, all his mates were getting into solumun or mgmt or something, but instead, he looked to texas. excitingly, where some country stuff is just pastiche, this one’s never overwrought.
the production is a smokeshow and hynes’ songwriting is sharp – he’s got himself a fan over here at introvert disco.
it’s a second release from his midnight country music saga, following a sold-out debut at glasgow’s mcnicholls, and ahead of a king tut’s show this june. baby’s high again feels made for tired hearts – it’s part alt-country, part indie haze and a lot good.
thank u for making this patrick hynes x
